I love Christmas lights I am one of those people

On 31 July 2019

| dlnubdzq

first_imgI love Christmas lights. I am one of those people who, given the chance, would absolutely cover my house with them and would cause an obstruction to landing aircraft, because of the brightness! My wife isn’t like me in that regard. She prefers understated Christmas lights, generally white with a red bow or something. We discuss this each November and, as Brian Clough used to say, “We sit down and chat and decide that she’s right!” Our house has white lights and red stars outside. It looks tasteful and very pretty, but I still secretly yearn for the colours and tackiness of the National Lampoon’s house!Have you ever noticed that, when you buy a traditional set of coloured Christmas fairy lights, they are generally four colours – green, blue, red and yellow? Did you realise that those colours each have something very powerful to say about the Christmas story?Green – the green lights are there to remind us of the shepherds, who were sitting in the fields and watching out for their sheep. The peace and tranquillity of their evening in Bethlehem’s hills was broken by the sound of angels, who told them about the birth of Jesus in the village below. Why is this so important? Well, shepherds really were on the bottom rung of the social ladder. They were uneducated and viewed as being social outcasts. Their testimony wasn’t valid in the court of law because, “Who would trust a shepherd?” Maybe, this year, you feel on the edge of things and of little value. Remember that God decided to tell the shepherds about Jesus’ birth before He told anyone else. He takes those on the edge and brings them right into the centre. You are of incredible importance.Blue – the blue lights are meant to remind us of the night sky and the Wise Men, who were searching for significance from a distant land. These people, the Magi, were followers of a different faith and were from the area around Iran. I find it incredible that some of the first people to recognise that Jesus was being born, weren’t the people who should have been looking. God will cross national and religious boundaries to tell people good news. Maybe this year has been a year of great change and transition for you. Maybe you find yourself in a different town, city or even nation and feel as though you will never fit in. God reminds us, through the story of the Wise Men, that if you are looking for Him, you will find Him. He reminds us that national, racial, gender, sexuality and any other divide that people put up in our culture, is irrelevant in His eyes – He loves each of us equally.Red – the red lights remind us that the Christmas story and the Easter story are completely linked. Just like the holly berries, the red lights are there to remind us that Jesus was prepared to die to make it possible for people to be friends of God. They remind us that, however low our self-opinion may be, you are worth the death of God’s son. You are of incredible value.Yellow – the yellow lights are to remind us of the gift of gold, which was given to Jesus’ family shortly after His birth. They are to remind us that, in a world of chaos, there is a king who is in control. This baby would grow up and would, literally, change the world – even the date on your calendar revolves around His birth. If you feel as though your world is spinning out of control, know that it is possible to find meaning and peace in knowing that there is a plan, even if we can’t always see it.As you celebrate Christmas this year and, as you see the lights shining around you, remember these four important messages – you matter, you are loved, you are valuable and you can know peace.Have a fantastic Christmas and see you in a few weeks as our pre-season friendlies get underway. As one club together, let’s make 2018 a year to remember and be Saints and Proud! Happy Christmas.last_img read more

Dr. Jong Whan Kim along with his office manager and girlfriend, Tammy Lynn Thompson, were arrested today, June 29th. This investigation originated from numerous citizen complaints and anonymous tips.“There will be consequences for anyone that is selling pills for profit over the value of human life,” said District Attorney Jon David at a Friday joint news conference in Whiteville with Sheriff Lewis Hatcher.Related Article: Men wanted in deadly SC carjacking, armed robbery at Columbus Co. storeThe office, as well as a home on Stake Road in Tabor City were targeted by SWAT and sheriff’s deputies.During the investigation, Columbus County Sheriff’s Office Vice-Narcotics Detectives utilized an undercover agent to purchase ounces of marijuana from Tammy Lynn Thompson, on numerous occasions. The undercover agent also purchased 115 hydrocodone tablets from Thompson. Dr. Kim’s office was located less than 1000 feet from Tabor City Elementary School. The office lacked the normal examination equipment that you usually see in a physician’s office. The exam rooms did not have examination tables only a chair for the patient to sit in. “There was no diplomas on the wall, there was not medical equipment that you would associate with a doctor’s office,” said David. The patient would then have the prescription filled at an area pharmacy according to the Sheriff’s Office. The office had numerous waiting rooms and they were all full when Detectives executed the search warrant.“Given the amount of pills that this group was putting out onto our streets, that the supply will be dramatically limited from this day moving forward,” David said. The two face now more than 45 charges many added on to one another by the District Attorney’s office. They range from conspiring to traffic opium/heroin, to selling a controlled substance within 1000 feet of a school, trafficking opium/heroin, and unlawful prescribing of a medication without legitimate medical purpose.Kim is under a $5.58 million bond and Thompson’s is set at $760,000.last_img read more

UNSOLVED Man shot to death while in bed in Castle Hayne home

first_imgNEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Detectives are still looking for a suspect and a motive in the death of a man shot in his own bed in Castle Hayne in 2002.Detective Justin Varella with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office said Frank Brown lived by himself in a house on Oakley Road in Castle Hayne 16 years ago.- Advertisement – “Frank went to work,” Varella said. “He worked hard. He mowed his yard. He took care of his house.”On July 3, 2002, the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office got a 911 call from that address. Varella said the 911 call came from Frank Brown’s son, Michael, who was 17 at the time. He said Michael was with his step brother and a friend of theirs at the time. Just before 10 that night, he said the three boys drove to Frank’s house for a quick visit.“When they get to the driveway, they see Frank Brown’s truck actually backing out of the driveway,” Varella said. “At some point, they noticed that it wasn’t Frank that was driving the truck, so they followed the truck for a little while and then they ended up turning around and going back to the house.”Related Article: Police: Mayor accused of pointing gun at minors in parkWhen they went inside, Varella said they found Frank was actually lying in bed and had suffered a head injury. It was a fatal gunshot wound. Varella said Michael immediately called 911 and first responders arrived.“Frank was obviously beyond any life saving measures at the time,” Varella said. That left his son and investigators with lots of unanswered questions. What happened to Frank’s truck?“It’s been reported that at least one of them saw the truck come back by the house while they were there and while they were trying to get emergency personnel on scene and then the truck ends up somewhere shortly down the road,” Varella said.Varella said it did not appear to be a robbery.“Didn’t appear to be any signs of forced entry, so it wasn’t a home invasion,” Varella said. “The house didn’t appear to be ransacked.”Did Frank even see it coming?“At the time that this happens, Frank is laying in bed probably watching tv,” Varella said. “He could have even been asleep at the time. There doesn’t seem to be any signs of a struggle, doesn’t seem to be any indication that Frank tried to fight anybody.”Was it a planned murder?“This could have very well been, you know, an ambush,” Varella said. Why would someone want to take Frank Brown’s life?“What I can tell you about Frank is that everybody that we’ve talked to over the years.. Really good guy,” Varella said. “You know, he was a very moral person.”Varella said Brown lived alone, but his son lived back and forth between his house and Michael’s mom’s house.“The relationship between he and his ex-wife wasn’t tumultuous,” Varella said.Varella said his neighbors all liked him.“Neighbors said that you know he was a good guy that pretty much kept to himself,” Varella said. “You know he was happy go lucky.”Varella said Brown was the assistant manager at the Wrightsboro Food Lion.“He tried to help people when he could,” Varella said. “The employees that were spoken to at Food Lion said that he was a very jovial person, liked to joke around with everybody. They felt like they could talk to him.”A plaque still hangs in the break room at that Food Lion in his memory.“It makes you wonder why? Why would this happen? Who would have wanted to kill this man? It appears someone had to be angry with him,” Varella said. “Someone was mad. I don’t know what he could have done to someone to make them this angry. With murder comes motive.”Varella Said they need someone to come forward who knows someone who was angry with Varella and thinks that could be why they would have killed him. If you have any information, please contact the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.last_img read more

(Photo: Hannah Patrick/WWAY) NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — CBS News Correspondent David Begnaud arrived in Wilmington Sunday to begin covering storm preparations for Hurricane Florence.Begnaud has spent the last year covering major hurricanes in Florida, Texas, and a large amount of time in Puerto Rico. Begnaud was in Puerto Rico before, during and weeks after Hurricane Maria devastated the island.- Advertisement – Begnaud said he was sent to Wilmington based on the track of Hurricane Florence on Sunday. Based on his experience, he said there is still a lot that can change.“At this point last year, I remember being in Florida for Hurricane Irma,” Begnaud said.  “We thought it was going into Miami and it shifted. We thought it was going to Tampa and then, it shifted towards Jacksonville.”Begnaud said he takes hurricane coverage very seriously.Related Article: ‘It was unreal’: UNCW professor narrowly missed by falling tree“As a journalist covering a hurricane is exhilarating. Right? Your adrenaline goes from zero to 60 quickly, but it’s also a time to remember that hyperbole has to be put aside, because as a journalist we have the responsibility to tell people what they need to know,” Begnaud said. “Right? And what they need to know right now is today is the day to prepare, not Wednesday. By Wednesday you may be told you need to get out.”Begnaud said he learned in Puerto Rico that journalism can be a lifeline.“At a time like this, people are watching television and they’re relying on us to leave the hyperbole out, right? Set aside the hysteria and just tell me the facts that I need to know.”Begnaud said there are about 20 or 30 CBS personnel stationed along the coast ready for wall to wall coverage when the storm hits. You can follow David Begnaud on Twitter for his local storm coverage.last_img read more

first_imgAdvertisement Speaking on the need for capacity-building within the telecom sector in developing countries, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, CEO of CTO, said, “With the ICT industry becoming ever more global and competitive, success requires a great deal of acumen, business savvy management teams and adherence to sound business management principles. The CTO Diploma in Telecommunications Management is framed around a complete overview in the core areas necessary for personal and organisational success in the telecoms sector. The programme offers participants an opportunity to learn and master the management and business skills relevant to the increasingly converging platforms of telecommunications, information technology, the Internet and broadcasting. Through expert-led lectures, workshops, real-time case studies and an ongoing comprehensive case competition tying together all functional areas, the Diploma ensures that participants understand key business practices and develop their managerial skills to reach personal goals and increase their contribution to the success of their organisations.”The course will entail lessons from every aspect of management, covering the industry outlook, the global and competitive telecommunications environment, global market evolution and trends, current issues in regulation and competition, licensing, interconnection, spectrum management, marketing management, customer acquisition and care, public communication, project management, human resources management, financial management and strategic and business planning. It will also provide an insight into new technologies and service offerings such as xDSL (e.g. ADSL, SDSL, VDSL), 3G mobile (e.g. UMTS, WCDMA, CDMA2000, HSDPA/HSUPA), 4G mobile (e.g. WiMAX, LTE), mobile payment services, IPTV, Network planning and management, besides others. The training programme is open to all professionals either in the telecoms and ICT industries or elsewhere who wish to increase their personal and professional success by gaining an excellent comprehensive understanding of global telecommunications management. The course is expected to provide participants with the cross-functional knowledge, managerial and commercial skills to increase their performance in meeting their professional responsibilities. It will equip participants with tools and techniques to face the challenges of the new telecommunications environment. It will also help improve the competence, efficiency and effectiveness of participants as telecommunications managers and leaders by exposing them to key telecommunications management concepts and issues and thereby improving their strategic thinking and decision-making abilities. – Advertisement – In addition to the course being offered from 1 November to 10 December 2010 in Johannesburg, mostly to African regional professionals, a similar Telecommunications Management training programme will also be conducted in Fiji from the 8 November – 17 December 2010, aimed at professionals in the Australasia-Pacific region.last_img read more

Why Facebooks about to slow down and thats probably good

On 30 July 2019
| dlnubdzq

first_imgAdvertisement Bad news: Your Facebook page is likely about to slow down. Good news: The change will help keep online thieves away.According to a recent blog post, Facebook is in the process of moving all of its users in North America — and soon the rest of the world — to a type of Internet connection that is more secure but also tends to slow down Web browsing a bit.Called HTTPS, as opposed to less-secure HTTP, it’s the connection you see on online retail sites when you’re about to enter credit card information or a password. Sometimes a little lock icon appears in the browser window when you’re connected to a site with HTTPS. (The “s,” by the way, stands for “secure.”) – Advertisement – “As the Web evolves, expectations around security change,” Facebook’s Alex Rice wrote last year when he announced that HTTPS would become an option on Facebook. “For example, HTTPS — once a technology used primarily on banking and e-commerce sites — is now becoming the norm for any Web app that stores user information.”The new change is that Facebook is starting make HTTPS the default setting for all its 1 billion-plus users, so people who haven’t selected that option soon will get added security — and, potentially, slower browsing.“People will be able to opt-out of HTTPS for maximum speed if that’s how they roll,” according to the blog TechCrunch.“It is far from a simple task to build out this capability for the more than a billion people that use the site and retain the stability and speed we expect,” Facebook’s Frederic Wolens told that tech news site, “but we are making progress daily towards this end.“This may slow down connections only slightly, but we have deployed significant performance enhancements to our load balancing infrastructure to mitigate most of the impact of moving to HTTPS, and will be continuing this work as we deploy this feature.”How will you know whether you’re using HTTPS or HTTP? Look at the top of your browser window, where you enter Internet addresses. If you go to Facebook and see https://facebook.com in that box, then you’re browsing on the more-secure connection, which scrambles data as it sends it back and forth to Facebook’s servers, making it more difficult for someone in the middle to nab your passwords or other sensitive data.“Think of it like this: you’re having a private conversation with your new boyfriend or girlfriend, and your ex — unbeknownst to you — is a few tables over listening to every word,” the blog Lifehacker writes in a post titled “WTF is HTTPS.” “That’s the sort of risk HTTP poses, whereas HTTPS would be more like if you and your new romantic interest were speaking a new language that only the two of you understood. To your stalker of an ex, this information would sound like gibberish and s/he wouldn’t get any value from listening if s/he tried.“HTTPS is a way for you to exchange information with a web site securely so you don’t have to worry about anyone trying to listen in.”Other online services, including Gmail, already use HTTPS by default.Source: CNNlast_img read more

BENS BLOG The Manual People – PLEASE stop your incessant grunting sounds

first_img[dropcap]G[/dropcap]reatest Marketing Man, Bill Esdaile called me, in an exasperated tone, yesterday morning. Was he angry that, at a whim, I had overruled one of his well thought out promotional plans? For once; no. Instead, Bill had returned from hospital, where his son and heir, Alfie had been rushed in, during the previous night. Poor Alfred had a temperature of over 100 degrees, and his lips had gone purple, and not through the consumption of too many Wham bars (remember them, Blog? Loved ’em, when I were a lad). On arrival at the hospital, Bill was amazed though, to see a huge group of seemingly fine, spoilt-English-whiteys, clogging the whole place up. What were the malingerers doing there, in the middle of the night? On speaking to a nurse, he was informed that they were all making pretend-wonky-legs, in order to get signed off for more sick-notes and benefit money. My only hope, is that such characters are placed in the slow lane, whilst the deserving causes are glided by.Ben’s Blog Verdict: We’ve brought such a situation upon ourselves. WE ARE THE MUGS, NOT THEM.In other news:Cabbell Street, and the surrounding blocks, are currently being tarted-up. For the next couple of weeks, there will be scaffolding up, outside my flat, whilst the work is being carried out. Although I am most grateful for such improvements, and I look forward to the end result, I have to ask; WHY do The Manual People have to make such a bloody racket and such loud grunting-sounds, every five seconds?! Mellon Foundation againaugmented its strong support of Rice’s academic programs in March by approving a$1.475 million matching grant to fund three postdoctoral fellowships in thehumanities and associated social sciences. The foundation awarded $345,000to the Shepherd School of Music for faculty development and scholarships in1992.“The most recent Mellon grant for postdocs is one in a longseries of votes of the foundation’s confidence in Rice’s academic programs,”Rice President Malcolm Gillis said. “The entire university is immensely gratefulfor Mellon Foundation support for activities across the university.”David Nirenberg, director of the Center for the Study ofCultures and associate professor of history, said that during the past 20 years “the Mellon Foundation has emerged as the single most important private sourceof support for higher education in the fields covered by the center.”“Like so many of their grants, this one’s benefits will be felton many levels,” he said. “Their action is a welcome confirmation of thecenter’s programs and aspirations. Haas Gender Inequality Addressed By Manbassadors

On 28 July 2019

first_imgHaas Gender Inequality Addressed By ‘Manbassadors’ About the AuthorJonathan PfefferJonathan Pfeffer joined the Clear Admit and MetroMBA teams in 2015 after spending several years as an arts/culture writer, editor, and radio producer. In addition to his role as contributing writer at MetroMBA and contributing editor at Clear Admit, he is co-founder and lead producer of the Clear Admit MBA Admissions Podcast. He holds a BA in Film/Video, Ethnomusicology, and Media Studies from Oberlin College.View more posts by Jonathan Pfeffer Related Haas-Berkeley recently profiled the Manbassadors, a student organization that provides men with tools to “better support their female friends, girlfriends, wives and daughters when they’re no longer blind to how women often have to deal with unfair situations.” Dean Richard Lyons will present a “Question the Status Quo” award to Manbassadors Founder Patrick Ford ’17.Ford explains that a “Manbassador” is a “male ally who works to end gender discrimination by supporting and being an advocate for women.” He explains the impetus of the organization: “There’s a growing awareness of how significantly unconscious bias affects our behavior.” Male students fill out the manbassador commitment pledge and check boxes for each commitment they’re willing to make. Ford says, “The most committed members plan events, write short educational emails and evaluate and improve the program as a whole.” One commitment could be to “consciously check my thoughts and actions as I work with and lead gender-diverse teams” while another could be to have “private conversations with male professors when women in class have concerns about potentially sexist materials.”Two Manbassador initiatives include Guy Talk sessions, which “provide structured time for guys to learn more about women’s experiences and to engage in conversations about gender equity,” and Interview a Woman lunch sessions, where men “interviewed women about their experiences as women drawing questions from handouts that Ford provided. While the Manbassadors program has had a tangible impact on Haas men, female classmates have also responded positively, including one who wrote, “For me, the existence of our manbassadors program was significant because gender dynamics are not just seen as a ‘woman’s problem,’ but as an issue both men and women need to address together.”Ford concludes, “Almost all the top U.S. business schools have a manbassador program (though not all of them call it that) in some stage of development. Many graduates will be going into high-level roles at Fortune 500s and a wide range of enterprises around the world. They can have a huge impact where they work.”center_img Last Updated Jun 8, 2017 by Jonathan PfefferFacebookTwitterLinkedinemail regions: San Franciscolast_img read more

Admissions Tip The Waitlist

On 28 July 2019
| dlnubdzq

first_img regions: Atlanta / Baltimore / Boston / Chicago / Dallas / Denver / Houston / London / Los Angeles / Miami / New York City / Online / Philadelphia / Research Triangle / San Diego / San Francisco / Seattle / Toronto / Washington, DC Last Updated Nov 27, 2017 by Metro MBAFacebookTwitterLinkedinemail Last week was marked by Round 1 decision releases from a couple of the schools covered on MetroMBA and Clear Admit, and in the coming weeks, many of the remaining schools are scheduled to release R1 decisions. Clear Admit’s MBA LiveWire has captured a lot of this news, including quite a few candidates recently reporting that they’ve been waitlisted at places like London Business School and INSEAD.For better or for worse, waitlisting is rather popular with top schools in the first round of admissions. As such, we’re devoting this week’s admissions tip to guidance for candidates who find themselves placed on a waitlist. Before we get to that, let’s look first at why schools use a waitlist. Why Schools Use the WaitlistFirst and foremost, while schools now know the quality of their Round 1 pool, they don’t yet know how strong the remainder of their applicants for this admissions season will prove, nor can they predict how many of the candidates admitted as part of Round 1 will ultimately enroll. Simply put, the waitlist helps schools manage these unknowns to arrive at the strongest possible class come fall. Some schools will “under admit” Round 1 candidates in case there is a flood of quality applicants in Round 2 or a higher yield of Round 1 candidates than predicted. The goal of the school is, after all, to admit the best overall class, regardless of when someone applies. They also do not want to over admit during an early round, which will limit their opportunities to admit strong candidates later, thus the push to “under admit,” and place significant quantities of candidates on the waitlist who may very well gain admission in later rounds. Chicago Booth explains this well on their web-site: “The waitlist at Chicago Booth is used to gauge the pool of candidates in a subsequent round before offering a final decision to those candidates placed on the waitlist.”Schools also can learn, by placing a candidate on the waitlist, how committed he or she is to attending the school. There is signal value in how a candidate responds to the waitlist decision. Some candidates placed on a waitlist receive offers at other schools they would prefer to attend, in which case they will opt out. Others remain convinced that the school that has waitlisted them is their best choice and will hold out to see if they can ultimately gain admission. As well, if you are waitlisted, we’ve outlined some more advice we feel will help you on the way to earning an MBA.Five Tips for Making the Best of the WaitlistIf you find yourself on the waitlist, don’t lose hope. Top programs admit a fair number of individuals from the waitlist in Round 2 and even later. That said, we know that cautious optimism does not make the wait for an answer any easier. To help those in this situation make sure that they’re doing all they can, we do have a few strategic waitlist tips:Know—and follow—the rules. Schools vary in their stances when it comes to interaction with those on the waitlist; some shun communication from applicants and even go so far as to discourage on-the-record campus visits, whereas others welcome correspondence and assign an admissions office liaison to serve the needs of waitlisted candidates. We know that the natural impulse is to update the adcom that recent promotion or the final grade from that accounting class you took to bolster your academic profile. At first blush, a short letter or quick call to communicate this kind of update might seem harmless. But no matter how exciting the piece of news you want to share may be, ignoring the adcom’s instructions is ultimately going to reflect badly on you. Though policies discouraging communication from waitlisted candidates may seem frustrating or unfair, it’s important to respect and abide by the preferences of each school.Communicate if you can. For those programs that do permit or encourage contact from waitlisters—Booth, for example, has traditionally invited waitlisted candidates to submit an additional 300-word essay—it is important to provide an update. In addition to the obvious news items mentioned above, it’s beneficial to read over your essays and reflect on whether there is some piece of your background or interests that you haven’t gotten across yet. Taking the time to write about your relevant recent experiences, positive developments in your candidacy and ways that you’ve enhanced your understanding of the program is a nice sign of your interest in the school and a good strategy for telegraphing your commitment to attending. It is, of course, also in your interest to make sure that the adcom has the most up-to-date information so that it can make an informed decision the next time your file comes up for evaluation.Keep in touch.Don’t disappear after an initial note to the adcom or phone call to your waitlist manager (if applicable). If you have plans to be on or near campus, for instance, send a quick email to alert your waitlist manager (or whoever you may have interacted with on the adcom) to this fact. In many cases, you’ll find that the adcom will even invite you to stop by for a friendly chat about your candidacy—something that can go a long way towards helping your case. Beyond a visit, sending a brief update every few weeks or so is another way to reaffirm your interest in the school and keep you fresh in the minds of the adcom—something that could work to your advantage in a discussion of which candidates to admit from the waitlist. In all cases, it is important to remember that there is a fine line between persistence and pestering, so use good judgment!Letters of support. If, during the admissions process, you have interacted with students or alumni of the program, it may be worth reaching back out to these individuals and updating them on your status. Assuming you have made a positive impression during the admissions cycle, they may be willing to provide an additional letter of support for your candidacy at this stage of the process.Have a contingency plan. While it’s important to be consistent and enthusiastic when waitlisted and communicate with staff at your target program, it’s also wise to have a backup plan. With the Round 2 deadlines for several top programs a little over a month away, there’s still time to put together a solid application to another school. Even if you’re waitlisted at the school of your dreams and intend to reapply if not admitted, it’s also never too early to start thinking about the coming year and what steps you might take to enhance your candidacy before next fall.Good luck to everyone waiting to receive decisions over the next few weeks! This article has been edited and republished with permissions from Clear Admit.
