Drew CoveOctober 29, 2016Jump to CommentsShare on FacebookShare on TwitterShare via EmailPrintMinnesota took a page from St. Cloud’s book Friday and did the same thing to Clarkson that the Huskies did twice last weekend. The Gophers, who lost to the Huskies by way of 3-goal and 2-goal comebacks last weekend, ended up overcoming a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Clarkson Golden Knights 4-3 in overtime in the first game of a two-game road trip in New York.Minnesota’s comeback started midway through the second period, first with a power-play goal from forward Mike Szmatula, and then almost two minutes later on another power play came junior forward Leon Bristedt’s first goal to cut Clarkson’s lead to one. After ending the first period tied in shots at 11 apiece, Minnesota took the offensive momentum to fire off 13 shots in the second, and 11 shots in the third.Senior Captain Justin Kloos was the third period hero and scored his second goal of the season to tie the game at 3 all and overtime came next. Bristedt scored on Minnesota’s first shot during overtime less than two minutes in for the come-from-behind victory. All of the Gophers goals in the game went unanswered.Though Minnesota goaltender Eric Schierhorn let in three of the first 11 shots he faced, he closed up his net to deny the next 10 shots he faced in the second and third period.No. 12 Minnesota travels to Canton, NY Saturday. to face off against the No. 18 St. Lawrence Saints.last_img read more

Whooping cough cases tied to waning vaccine protection

| ewoqfyqz

first_imgA child who has never been vaccinated against pertussis, or whooping cough, is 13 times more likely to suffer from an infection of Bordetella pertussis than is a child who is up-to-date on his or her vaccines. But new evidence from a decade-long study at Kaiser Permanente shows that vaccinated children were five times more likely to suffer from whooping cough if it had been more than 3 years since their last vaccine dose. The research was published today in Pediatrics.DTaP vaccine, which protects against pertussis, diphtheria, and tetanus, is given in five doses between the ages of 2 months and 6 years. In this study, researchers from Kaiser Permanente Northern California followed children born between 1999 and 2016 who were diagnosed as having whooping cough. The researchers identified 738 pertussis cases, with 99 cases in unvaccinated children, 36 in undervaccinated children, 515 in fully vaccinated children (five DTaP doses), and 88 in children who had received six doses of DTaP.More than 80% of cases occurred in fully vaccinated children. Children only partially vaccinated were 1.9 times more likely to contract whooping cough than fully vaccinated peers. “Although noncompliance with the vaccination schedule is an important public health problem that leads to increased pertussis risk, most children in our study received all their recommended DTaP doses,” the authors wrote. “Our results reveal that waning of DTaP immunity was an important cause of pertussis in children.”In 2010 and 2014, California experienced two large pertussis outbreaks, with more than 9,000 cases each.Waning acellular immunityThis is the third study completed by this researcher group to provide evidence of waning pertussis immunity, and the authors said results are consistent with other recent data that showed the odds of pertussis increased by 33% for every additional year after the third or the fifth DTaP dose.Kathryn Edwards, MD, of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, said in a commentary on the study that the waning efficacy is likely because DTaP is an acellular vaccine, which replaced a whole-cell vaccine, DTwP, in 1997.Whole-cell vaccines, Edwards explains, generate more protective T-cell responses. After the introduction of a whole-cell pertussis vaccine in the United States, annual rates of the disease dropped from 150 per 100,000 in the 1940s to 1 per 100,000 in the 1970s in the United States.Though efficacious, DTwP caused more reactions than DTaP, including febrile seizures and local injection-site reactions.DTwP is no longer available in the United States or other high-income countries, so other strategies to boost pertussis immunity must be explored, including maternal vaccination and an intranasal booster dose of the vaccine, Edwards said.See also:Jun 10 Pediatrics studyJun 10 Pediatrics commentarylast_img read more

Maputo Dredging on the Way

| ewoqfyqz

first_imgA maintenance dredging of the Port of Maputo quays is scheduled to begin in a month’s time, using TNPA’s (Transnet National Ports Authority) brand new dredging vessel Italeni. This campaign will ensure that all quays at the port are returned to their designed depth. The dredging contract was signed on Wednesday, September 3rd, at the Port of Durban, South Africa. The agreement to use Italeni, a 750 m3 grab hopper dredger, forms part of an MoU signed with TNPA in June last year, with both ports committing to strengthening relationships. The MoU has resulted in the training of employees at TNPA’s Maritime School of Excellence, the acquisition and refurbishment of Ntwanano tugboat (on its way to Maputo), as well as the new dredger vessel Italeni which will be heading to the Port of Maputo in two weeks’ time to assist with the dredging of the port.“The signing of the Italeni contract is evidence that the Port of Maputo and the ports of South Africa are not in competition but are collaborating to realize the regional economic integration as the world is pinning its hope on the African continent for economic growth. These are benefits of a relationship that started a few years ago,” said Mr. Osório Lucas, Chief Executive Officer for the Maputo Port Development Company.[mappress]Press Release, September 5, 2014last_img read more

Defendant pays an extra £65,000 after fractional Part 36 defeat

| ewoqfyqz

first_imgMrs Justice O’FarrellSource: Photoshot/AvalonIn giving her judgment, O’Farrell J stated the claimants had achieved a judgment sum at least as advantageous as the one they had offered. A further costs order, she noted, should only come based on the terms of the Part 36 offer, the stage in proceedings when it was made, the information available to the parties at the time, the conduct of the parties and whether the offer was a genuine attempt to settle proceedings.  The judge said of Hochtief: ‘The terms of the offer were clear. The Part 36 offer was made at a very early stage in the proceedings, after the letter of claim but before the issue of the formal claim. By that time, extensive investigations and remedial works had been concluded.’ She ruled the claimants, who had been involved in a contract dispute, were entitled to an enhanced rate of interest on damages and costs from the date of expiry of the offer. She set interest on damages at 6% above base rate and ordered that costs be assessed on an indemnity basis. The claimants will receive an extra £65,123 as a result on top of their awarded damages. A losing party has been ordered to pay an extra £65,000 after declining to settle a case over a difference amounting to less than £5,000. The claimants in Hochtief (UK) Construction Ltd & Anor v Atkins Ltd had made a Part 36 offer to settle for £875,000, with the defendant having three weeks to respond. That offer was not accepted and the claimants obtained judgment more than two years later for £879,848. Mrs Justice O’Farrell made clear that Part 36 rules applied even when the difference between the rejected offer and the final award was relatively small. The ruling serves as a warning to all litigants that seemingly tough outcomes for failing to beat a Part 36 offer continue to be imposed by the courts. last_img read more
